Living in the NWT brings me such joy, and I am committed to being a positive force in the political arena, to help set a new tone of collaboration, urgency, and hope.
The evacuations magnified many pre-existing issues with the GNWT, and the biggest strengths and weaknesses of our community. While many individuals rose to the challenge, there were huge gaps in emergency plans and GNWT systems failed spectacularly to communicate and collaborate effectively with the city, NGOs, Indigenous governments, its own employees, and its citizens.
I know from my work on City Council that systemic change can be scary for both bureaucracies and citizens, but it is also necessary and possible, with a compassionate approach that considers all perspectives and invites everyone to be part of solutions. I have seen governance become much more effective when politicians and administration learn to trust and respectfully challenge one another.
